When I was a NUPE Assistant Divisional Officer in Oxford, Bick came down to a staff meeting and stayed overnight with me. Alf Collier’s wife, Lil, invited us all to dinner after our meeting. Lil cooked a lovely steak & kidney pie which we all ate with relish. The next morning Alf learned that Bick was a vegetarian.
Alf told Bick that he and Lil were devastated and why hadn’t he said something. Bick’s reply has always stayed with me. He said, “because Alf, Lil had gone to a lot of trouble and people are more important than principles.”
